BIS EAL (English as an Additional Language) Camp offers an outstanding English language learning experience for students in grades 2-12. A dedicated team of qualified EAL instructors will provide a challenging and supportive environment for each student. Students of all levels will develop greater competence and confidence when speaking, listening, reading and writing in English.
Students have the opportunity to learn in an international school and will learn to function in an English speaking environment with greater confidence and success. Students with more advanced competence in English will develop stronger skills and learning strategies in preparation for their future studies. All students will have the chance to grow and develop socially, academically and cognitively.
Placement:
Students will be grouped with peers who have similar ability levels in at the start of the program. English skills will be assessed the first day of the summer session for all students.
Assessment:
All students who attend will take a comprehensive EAL exam at the end of the session to assess the progress made.
Speaking and Listening:
Students will use oral language in a variety of situations for social and academic purposes in order to:
- Express ideas, opinions and feelings with clarity and confidence
- Communicate for a range of personal and academic purposes
- Apply grammatical rules to increase communicative clarity, accuracy and complexity
Reading and Writing Workshop:
Students will explore different text genres that are studied at the Bavarian International School in order to:
- Expand vocabulary for specific themes
- Develop reading comprehension strategies to create meaning from text
- Improve written expression using a specific writing process
- Develop a variety of language learning strategies
Integrated Language and Content Workshops :
Specific concepts from literature and history are investigated in order to:
- Develop key language and concepts related to a specific content area
- Use study skills and learning strategies for the specific content area classroom.
During the programme, activities will include:
- Interactive activities that will challenge students to communicate and help them build greater confidence and skill in listening and speaking
- Reading, writing and research activities centred around relevant and engaging topics and text types
- Hands-on, engaging activities where students can apply their learning to challenging collaborative projects
Students will be grouped with peers of similar ability level at the start of the programme. For students entering the regular academic programme of the Bavarian International School, the Summer School Intensive EAL programme is intended to prepare students for their new school.
